What Is It & How Dr. Sajeet Does It
What is circumcision?
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin - the fold of skin covering the tip of the penis. It is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world and is performed for medical, cultural, and personal reasons. Medical indications include: phimosis (a tight foreskin that cannot be pulled back), paraphimosis (a foreskin that is retracted and cannot be returned to its normal position), recurrent balanitis (infection of the foreskin and glans), and lichen sclerosus (a skin condition causing scarring and tightening of the foreskin). For children, the procedure is also performed for recurrent urinary tract infections related to the foreskin. Circumcision is also performed for cultural, religious, and personal hygiene reasons - Dr. Sajeet performs the procedure in all these contexts without judgment.
Laser circumcision vs. surgical circumcision - what is the difference?
Laser circumcision uses a precise laser to remove the foreskin. Advantages: minimal bleeding, very precise tissue removal, reduced risk of infection, faster healing compared to conventional surgery. Slightly higher cost. Surgical circumcision (conventional) uses a scalpel and sutures. Well-established, equally safe and effective, and available at all of Dr. Sajeet's clinic locations. For adults: local anaesthesia is used - you are awake but the area is completely numb. For children: general anaesthesia - the child is fully asleep. Both are day-care procedures at all locations: Aveksha Hospital Yelahanka, ARC Clinic Malleshwaram, Even Hospitals Madhava Nagar, and Manipal Hospital.
Patient Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What to pack What should I bring for circumcision surgery?
Loose, comfortable clothing - loose cotton trousers or pyjama pants, no tight jeans or underwear. Wear or bring soft cotton underwear to the clinic. For children: bring a favourite toy or comfort object, any allergy information, and the child's vaccination records if requested. ID, insurance card if applicable. Someone to take you (or your child) home. Dr. Sajeet's team across all locations - Aveksha Hospital Yelahanka, ARC Clinic Malleshwaram, Even Hospitals Madhava Nagar, and Manipal Hospital - will provide a take-home wound care kit and instructions.
Time off work How long do I need off work after circumcision?
For adults: desk work or WFH in 3-5 days for most patients. Physical work, active jobs, or roles involving prolonged walking or standing: 7-10 days. For parents of children having the procedure: children typically recover faster than adults and return to school in 5-7 days, avoiding physical activity for 2 weeks.
Driving When can I drive after circumcision surgery?
Most adult patients can drive within 5-7 days - once off prescription pain medication and comfortable seated without significant discomfort. Avoid long drives for the first 2 weeks. Do not drive if you feel distracted by pain or discomfort.
Returning to gym When can I go back to the gym after circumcision?
Light walking from day 3-4. Gym, running, or cycling from week 3-4 - when healed and comfortable. Avoid any exercise that creates friction, pressure, or stretching of the wound for the first 2-3 weeks. Swimming: wait until fully healed - typically 3-4 weeks after the sutures have dissolved.
Diet Is there a specific diet after circumcision?
No specific dietary restriction. However, staying well-hydrated is important. Avoid constipation - straining can cause discomfort. A normal, balanced diet with adequate fluid intake is all that is needed. Alcohol should be avoided for the first week as it can thin the blood and interfere with healing.
Is this normal? The swelling and appearance are alarming. Is that normal?
Yes - swelling after circumcision is consistently the thing that surprises patients most. The area can look significantly swollen, bruised, and discoloured in the first 3-5 days. This is completely normal and is part of the healing response. Swelling typically peaks at day 2-3 and then steadily reduces. If swelling is increasing beyond day 5, is accompanied by a fever, or has foul-smelling discharge, contact Dr. Sajeet's team.
Yellow coating There is a yellowish coating on the healing area. Is that normal?
Yes - a thin yellowish-white film can form over the healing wound in the first week. This is fibrin - the body's natural wound-sealing response - and is not infection. It is a normal part of healing. Pus from infection is typically thicker, foul-smelling, and accompanied by increasing redness, warmth, and fever. If you are unsure, call Dr. Sajeet's clinic.
Should I be worried? What signs after circumcision should I not ignore?
Contact Dr. Sajeet immediately if: fever above 38.5 degrees, increasing redness or swelling after day 5 (not improving), foul-smelling discharge, sutures opening before healing is complete, difficulty passing urine, or any active bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure. These are uncommon but require prompt evaluation.
Child's pain My child is in pain and I feel anxious - is that normal?
Completely normal. Seeing your child in discomfort after any procedure is distressing. Children typically recover faster than adults and are usually running around within a week - though this should be limited. The pain is real but manageable with prescribed medication. Follow the dosage instructions carefully, and call Dr. Sajeet's team if the pain seems disproportionate or if the child develops a fever.
Did something go wrong? The result looks different from what I expected. Is that normal?
The final appearance after circumcision is not fully visible until healing is complete - typically 4-6 weeks. The swollen, bruised appearance in the first 2 weeks is not the final result. At the follow-up appointment with Dr. Sajeet, he will assess healing and address any concerns about the result. If you have specific aesthetic expectations, discuss these at the consultation before the procedure.
Will this affect sensitivity or sexual function? Will circumcision affect sexual sensation or function?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions by adult patients. Studies on sensitivity changes after adult circumcision show mixed results - some men report no change, some report minor changes in either direction. Circumcision does not affect erection, ejaculation, or fertility. Sexual function is preserved. Most men who have circumcision for medical reasons (phimosis, recurrent infection) report significant improvement in comfort and quality of life after the procedure. Dr. Sajeet will discuss this honestly at the consultation.
Insurance Is circumcision covered by health insurance in India?
Most health insurance policies cover medically necessary surgical procedures. However, for elective and non-emergency conditions, many policies have a waiting period (commonly up to 2 years, depending on the insurer and plan). Coverage, cashless eligibility, co-payments, exclusions, and waiting periods vary between policies. Dr. Sajeet's team can help verify your insurance benefits, pre-authorisation requirements, and expected coverage before surgery. Please bring your insurance card and policy details to your consultation for eligibility verification.
Circumcision performed for a medical reason - phimosis, paraphimosis, recurrent balanitis, lichen sclerosus - is covered under most standard health insurance policies in India as a medically necessary procedure. Circumcision performed for cultural, religious, or personal preference reasons is generally not covered by insurance (considered elective). Pre-authorisation is required for medically indicated cases. Dr. Sajeet's team will assist with documentation.
